Frequently Asked Questions

Is there extra care involved with a hand-made cutting board or serving board?

As with all wood products, hand-made or store-bought, you shouldn’t put your board in the dishwasher. However, our hand-made boards are surfaced and finished to last much longer than store-bought and are easy to maintain to keep them looking and feeling great!

Every 3-6 months depending on how heavily you use your board, apply Howard Butcher Block conditioner or mineral oil for wood to keep your board conditioned and water resistant.

How do I clean my board?

For regular cleaning, wipe clean with a damp cloth. For a deeper clean, use a mild soap. Immediately dry the surface using a clean, dry cloth. For boards without feet, ensure proper airflow for both the top and bottom during drying.

How do I made my board look new again?

Unlike store-bought or mass produced products, our boards are made with pure hardwood and natural finish that is easy to resurface.

First, clean and thoroughly dry your board, then sand in stages while keeping steady and consistent pressure across the whole board to keep the surface level. After sanding, apply a food-grade cutting board wax or finish.

Sanding: start with 120-grit sandpaper on a sanding block and work your way across the full surface of your board until knife marks are smoothed to your liking. Follow with 220-grit sandpaper until the surface has returned to a smooth texture. (Optional: for an even smoother finish- after using 220-grit, wipe with a clean damp cloth and let dry, then use a 320-grit sandpaper to close the grain and give your board a buttery soft texture.) Follow sanding with the finish of your choice. We love Howard Butcher Block conditioner or mineral oil for wood.
